Face the Interface
What would it be like if an algorithm could tell you a story, simply by looking at yourself?
New technology can be intimidating. That is why people tend to mythologize it. Assumptions are made, fed by extremes: techno-utopism from Silicon Valley on one side, fear of invasion of our privacy and personal lives on the other. With Face the Interface technology that has become a vital part of our life is made accessible and discussable.
Algorithms are everywhere. They make our life smarter, efficient and beautiful. But what do we really know about them? How do they make decisions? What kind of influence do they have over our lives? Our faces are the most personal possession that we have, and even those have become a target of algorithms. Every day we’re being scanned, tagged and shared, whether we realize it or not. What would it be like if an algorithm could tell you a story, simply by looking at yourself?
This was a project i did together with Anja Groten for the Sandberg@Mediapark masterclass, with help from Maartje Smits and Pam Toonen.
